History

A community institution shaped by harmony, mutual affection, cultural work, and seva.

The progress of society depends upon creating harmony and mutual affection among individuals within the community. With this intention, the late Shri Vishnu and Balasaheb Korde, along with other respected members of the Brahmin community, conceived the idea of establishing an organization for the welfare of the community. This idea soon took a concrete shape.

On 10 December 1961, Margashirsha Shukla 7, Shaka 1883, under the chairmanship of Shri Ramchandra Kashinath Oak, a general meeting was held in which the organization named Brahman Seva Mandal was formally established and its constitution was approved.

Initially, the organization conducted its activities in rented venues. However, as participation increased, the need for a permanent place became evident. A committee was formed and efforts began to acquire land for the institution, which eventually succeeded.

In 1972, due to the efforts of Vijay Sthanik and other members, a plot measuring 1911 square yards was acquired on Tilak Road. To raise funds for construction, many cultural programs were organized, including performances by renowned artists such as Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Vasantrao Deshpande, and others.

In 1974, the Ganesh Festival celebrations began at the organization’s own premises. Activities such as career guidance classes, typing courses, personality development sessions, Ganeshotsav celebrations, Mahalaxmi Pujan, and various religious programs were started there. Later, yoga and Surya Namaskar classes were also introduced.

In 1982, the organization received permission to build its own hall. Soon after, construction work began under the guidance of the trustees. The hall construction was completed in 1984, and activities expanded significantly with growing support from community members.

On 15 August 1986, at a grand general meeting, it was resolved to construct a new building for the organization. Large-scale fundraising efforts were undertaken. On 12 and 13 October 1986, cultural programs and theatrical performances by artists associated with the institution were organized to raise funds. Community members also contributed generously. Additional financial assistance was obtained through a loan from Bank of Maharashtra.

The inauguration ceremony of the new building was held on 30 August 1988.

Inspired by the motto “उद्धरेत आत्मना आत्मानम्” meaning “One should uplift oneself through one’s own efforts”, the institution continued expanding its activities. By 1991, the organization’s turnover had increased substantially.

Although the Mandal’s activities were primarily intended for the community, they remained inclusive and beneficial to society at large. Alongside religious and cultural programs, the organization also started initiatives such as employment guidance, medical assistance, educational support, and various social welfare activities.

The institution later began considering broader social initiatives. With this vision, land near Nerul in Navi Mumbai was acquired to establish an Anand Ashram for senior citizens, along with medical and educational service projects. The foundation ceremony for this initiative was performed on 20 November 1999 under the leadership of then-president Shri Suresh Marathe. The work on this project continues progressively.

From 1961 until today, many dedicated workers have contributed selflessly to the organization’s journey. Carrying forward the ideals and experiences of its founders, Brahman Seva Mandal continues moving steadily toward its centenary celebrations.
